Yaesu FT897D with RUMlogNG and WSJT-X

Unread post by G0JDL »

First of all, thank you for adding me to the forum.

I've been trying to get RUMlogNG to work with WSJT-X using my Yaesu FT-897D CAT control. This actually turned out to be very easy but I have one small problem. The rig always changes to "DIG" mode but I want it to stay in "USB" as I don't have an audio interface and just use the microphone for FT8 and WSPR. The microphone doesn't work when in DIG mode, hence the problem. Is there any way I can force the rig to stay in USB mode?

Dear friend

I assume that you don't have an audio interface but you do have a rig control interface.
If you have, the rig is controlled by WSJT-X. And you have to set up the control in the preferences menu in the second tab "Radio".
Here in the second column, 3rd option you have the Mode settings. Change to USB instead Data/Pkt. In my case this sets my FT-857 into DIG mode.
To communicate with RUMlog (as RUMlog help describes), you set up the UDP server in WSJT-X software in Preferences / Reporting (I have it with the default settings).
In RUMlog follow the help instructions and configure the UDP in the last tab of the preferences menu.

I hope this helps.

When RUMLog has the CAT control, it ignores the mode from WSJT-X. It uses the default for PSK. This is DIG for the FT-897.
Using a voice mode (SSB) for digital modes is not recommended.

Thanks for the replies. I tried changing the mode from DIG to USB but it kept going back to DIG but I guess it would if it uses PSK as the default mode. I appreciate that I'd be best off with an audio interface but until I'm sure that data modes will hold my interest I'll leave things as they are. I seem to be getting out ok with careful adjustment of ALC levels.

Anyway, today, I fitted a new CAT control cable as my old one was giving problems and now I cannot get RUMlogNG to change bands or key the PTT in WSJT-X. Still troubleshooting this one! I have partial control (frequency reads correct in both apps) but that's all. I suspect the cable is, once again, the cause of the problem and I may have to pay out for a genuine Yaesu cable.
