Newby & Need Help with TS-590

Unread post by KD8QWH »

I have a Kenwood TS-590 radio and my Computer is a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.5 I am unable to get my computer to control my radio via USB. My radio is set at 9600 Baud rate and the software is the same. 8 Bit setting, Parity is set at none and Use CTS is checked. What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is the COM port recognized correctly?

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me how I can verify this?

Check if you have selected the COM port which is connected to your transceiver. When you have installed the interface driver, the name should be listed in the popup menu.

Tom,

Thanks so much for your assistance. I don't have the driver. That option you presented does in not one of the options on my system. I'm searching for the correct driver right now to down load.

The port you see in my screen shot is not for TS-590, it's for another device.
When you use a USB-Serial converter cable, you will need the applicable driver for that interface.
When you use the direct USB connection, you will need the driver for the chip inside the TS-590, most probably a Silicon Labs chip. But I'm not sure about this.

Here's a screenshot of RUMlog's serial configuration for the TS-590.

Thank you for the screen shot. My Radio is running with firmware 1.0 I know that I have to update it to version 1.07; I will borrow a Windows PC to do that. Could my problem be that I am not working with up to date firmware? My MacBook Pro is 2 years old running 10.7.5. I installed the drivers for it yesterday, restarted the computer and connected the radio to the computer. I did not see the driver option.

Another question I have is this: After I install the drives for the Mac which I have, should I see the "SLAPB_USBtoUART" under Port regardless if the radio is connected?

Again, thanks for all the assistance. I greatly appreciate it.

You can see this option only when the rig is connected.

You should use the "Use CTS" option, rather than the "Set RTS line" option.

Not sure about version 1.0, I think my TS590 was already at 1.02 or 3 when I bought it, never had a problem since.

No, if the radio isn't connected you definitely will not see the SLAB... port in the serial ports list.
