support for CAT via rigctl?

I suspect I'm missing something obvious, but I'm not sure what.
My need for CAT in RUMlogNG is (like many people's, I'm sure) primarily so that when I'm logging contacts, it knows what frequency the contact was on. When I use flrig (on another host - a raspberry pi), things work fine - at least until flrig screws up. Sometimes, but not always, flrig simply stops getting updates from my FT-857D (it happens most frequently if I turn the radio off and back on - but has happened without turning off the rig)- and so I happily log contacts on the wrong frequency for a few minutes, until I notice. This is not great! I was having similar trouble between WSJT-X and flrig, so I started looking at using "rigctld" from Hamlib - this works great with WSJT-X, but I can't figure out how to get it working with RUMlogNG (assuming it's even possible).
The setup that works: RUMlogNG on my mac, with TX1 set to "use CAT" "Manufacturer: Others" "Type: flrig" "Interface: TCP" "For PTT use: TRX CAT", and "CAT: TCP" "Host: 10.187.2.31" "Port: 12345"
I've tried various things to get it to work with rigctld (which listens on port 4532), but I suspect it doesn't work. Does anyone know how I can get this working? The quest for "one setup that works for all programs" is so far eluding me... I would continue to use flrig, but it's too flaky for me - both in terms of logging, but also wsjt-x doesn't seem to get along with it well either.
One more point of clarification: I run RUMlogNG on my mac (of course), but the FT-857D is connected to a raspberry pi via a "Digirig mobile", and I run fldigi, rigctld, and wsjt-x there. Thanks for any guidance anyone can give me...
