IC-705

Unread post by BMWrider »

Is there a way to connect RUMlogNG (MacOS or iPadOS versions) wirelessly to an IC-705? I'd like to be able to have the app follow the radio (band, mode, freq) while in the field (e.g. POTA operations)? I've been able to have the IC-705 establish a connection to my iPad over Bluetooth, but nowhere in the app is the connection visible. Scan BT does not result in any BT Interfaces displayed. Can a connection (in the field) be accomplished through the WLAN?

You can connect the macOS version to the 705 via Bluetooth. You have to pair the devices. Note, this is called a serial connection, not Bluetooth! The baud rate is fixed to 9600 baud.

Unfortunately the 705 Bluetooth LE format isn't compatible to iOS. Currently there is no way to control the 705 using iOS without any further 3rd party hardware.

Thanks for the VERY quick reply. It's too bad the iPad and IC-705 can't "talk" to each other. I'd much prefer to take it into the field than my MacBook Pro.

The IC-705 and my MacBook Pro are connected via Bluetooth ... the IC-705 says connected within the Bluetooth menu (Bluetooth icon also illuminated on main screen). In the MacBook Pro Bluetooth menu, it shows ICOM BT(IC-705). However, within RUMlogNG, "Scan for devices" comes up empty. It's apparently not "seeing" the IC-705:

I've tried with both Serial and Bluetooth selected in the Interface menu, also with Use CAT selected and not selected with no success. Any help on settings would be greatly appreciated.

Serial as Interface is correct!
Use 1 stop bit only.
Of course, the Auto Discovery can not work with Bluetooth, deselect this option.
From the Serial Port popup select the BT port, it is called something like Icom BT-IC705

Eureka! Thank you VERY MUCH for your help. I was focused on expecting to see something in the CAT: Bluetooth LE section. The serial port option that worked was "Bluetooth-Incoming-Port" and once selected, the logging window followed the IC-705 band, frequency and mode. Perfect!
Thank you again!

First of all a big big THANK YOU to Tom for all the work he spent in creating RUMlog. A fantastical program!!!
I got a new Icom IC-705 and was deeply impressed by RUMlog’s CAT support for this device.

Working with an USB connection is fine. But this thread inspired me to try it also with BT and my MacBook Pro. It didn’t work. The question is: why?

1.) I paired the IC-705 with my MacBook Pro using SET/Bluetooth Set/Data Device Set/Serialport Function. In the MacBook bluetooth settings it appears as ICOM BT(IC-705)
2.) In the RUMlog setting I chose serial interface ICOMBTIC-705-SPPDev with 9600 baud, 1 stop bit, no parity; the interface is set to seriel
3.) I get an error message that no Bluetooth serial RFCOMM-channel can be opened. I should check, whether the authentification of my device must be activated. I don’t know how to interpret this … ?
4.) Furthermore I tried 3 different settings in SET/Bluetooth Set/Data Device Set/Serialport Function

a.) CI-V (Echo Back OFF)

b.) CI-V (Echo Back ON)’

c.) DV Data

without any effect on the connection problem. Which one would be right? 4a, 4b or 4c?
I would be happy for any guiding comment … ;-)

Best wishes from Munich,

Set SET-->Bluetooth Set-->Data Device Set-->Serialport Function
 to CI-V (Echo Back OFF)

Make sure, the 705 hasn't connected the Mac yet. This will cause the message Bluetooth serial RFCOMM-channel can not be opened later. You can use the Bluetooth menu on the Mac to connect the 705, but not vice versa. (I don't know why!) Or leave BT disconnected. When you start now the CAT, the Mac will connect the 705 automatically (once paired).

Thank you very much Tom for your lighting fast reply. It works. You made my day!

I will attach a step by step guide to prevent others from running into the same trap like me ..

1. open the Bluetooth settings preference pane on your Mac
2. on the IC-705 select: MENU/SET/Bluetooth Set/<<Pairing Reception>>
3. wait for about 10 seconds and watch the Bluetooth window on your Mac preference pane. The Icom should appear as ICOM BT(IC-705). Click on it to setup the connection (from the Mac side!).
4. In the RUMlog settings choose: Interface = "serial" and "Bluetooth-Incoming-Port", baud rate = 9600, stop bits = 1, parity = none, DESELCT the auto discovery

Due to the 9600 baud limitation in the interface it is notably slower than the USB connection and the waterfall cannot be shown on the Mac. But for logging and other CAT functions it might be more comfortable in the field operation without a cable.

Thats all. Not that much to do (if you know what to do ;-))
Thanks again Tom for the helping hand.
