FLDIGI + 7300 on CW and RTTY

Unread post by k3orc »

I have RUMLogNG and FLDigi running properly together on PSK31. On RTTY and CW, FLDigi keys the 7300 transmitter but does not produce output. My son (AB1XW) gave me these steps, which I had already tried, and they don't solve the "No output" problem on RTTY and CW:

Reboot the computer and the radio to start everything cleanly. I don’t know if that’s necessary, but it’s a habit. The order of starting the applications may also be important.
Start Fldigi. Go to Rig Control > XML-RPC, check “Use XML-RPC,” and initialize it.
Next, go to Audio > Devices and check PortAudio. Set your rig (probably “USB Audio Codec” or something like that) for Capture and Playback.
Next, go to the IO preference pane and note the address for XML - most likely 127.0.0.1, and port (7362 is the default).
Now start RUMLog NG. In Preferences > TX1, check “Use CAT,” “Send data to Fldigi,” make sure your rig is correctly described in the pull-downs, for PTT use TRX CAT, for RTTY use RTTY. See attached screenshot.
Next, go to the “µHAM/Fldigi” tab and confirm that the Host and Port are set correctly for Fldigi. “Use Fldigi for CAT” should be unchecked. I think I had “Use RUMLog for PTT switching” checked. If that doesn’t work, try unchecking it and/or checking the “Use Fldigi for CAT” option. Some combination of those will probably be correct.
Now go to Contest > New Contest and pick a RTTY contest. I know you want to do CW, but I’ve only tried this with RTTY, and if you can get PTT working there you can probably get it working for CW too. Under the Contest preferences, RTTY tab, set your messages and choose Fldigi as the RTTY interface.
In Transceiver controls, reset CAT #1. Set the contest window to RTTY mode and a drawer should slide out from the bottom showing decoded RTTY text and calls (if you’re receiving RTTY). Try sending a CQ.
If this setup doesn’t work, email DL2RUM. I remember him pointing me to one of these obscure settings to fix a similar problem, which is why I wrote down the whole configuration. Good luck.

So here I am. What is missing?

When PSK works, your setup seems to be okay.
Which mode do you have selected on the trx for RTTY?

Tom,

I have TRX set in RUMLogNG to use RTTY for RTTY mode and USB-Data for PSK31.
Screen shot of the window (hope this comes through OK):

Tom,

You gave me an idea, so I changed the TX mode to USB-Data for RTTY and it transmits RTTY fine now.
The problem with that is, I have to use the widest filter setting on the 7300 to get the RTTY signal in the passband of FLDigi. Is there a way to use the narrow filters on the 7300 with this setup?

You can shift the passband on the IC-7300. While is Data mode, you should always use the high tones. 2125/2295 Hz.

Thanks very much, Tom. I'll play with the passband tuning. I made a successful QSO on RTTY this evening with a station in Portugal who was 569. He gave me 599.

For CW, it's best to just use the RUMLog keying window and FLDigi for decoding. That works well.
