Can you connect the USB socket on the back of an Icom 7300 directly to the Mac (FTDI chipset?) or do you need to go via the CI-V socket to a USB converter?

You can connect it directly. When you want to use the IC-7300 Control window, this is required for a reliable CAT connection.
