I have had a look through the documentation and the postings on the forum but can find no reference to the vertical slider in the main logging window. I can't figure out what it is for! I can't remember when it first appeared.

Which slider do you mean? A picture would be helpful.
There may be a graphical issue sometimes right hand of the Station Info Box. When you make your window wider, there was an unused space, so I added an aux view to display dx-cluster or RTTY data. When you make the window smaller, it should disappear. Sometimes this dosen't happen correct. Just resize the window and it will layout correct.
