DL2RUM

Four weeks before the scheduled trip to Midway came the "No Go", due to closing of the island for public. I found an alternate destination within two weeks: Niue Island and got the call ZK2CW. Some days before and some days after that I was able to operate from Tonga using the call A35TL. In American Samoa I became a prohibition for my antenna, so it was not longer possible to activate KH8 for the planed four days.

Thanks to Jan, DJ8NK for the tips, and Klaus, DL1XX for providing the online-logs.

Due to the baggage limitations on inter island flights, the station was very simple, No Beam, no PA only an ICOM IC-706MKIIG and a 10m teleskop fishingrod to carry a wireantenna.

My location for A35TL

The Friendly Islander Hotel in Nuku'alofa. "Papiloa's Place" is a very HAM-friendly Hotel, with enough space available for my limited operation.

My host in Tonga: Papiloa

Papiloa was earlier activ in the parlament of Tonga. Therfore she knows the goverment and is very helpfull to get the licence.

If you want to operate your radio from "Papiloa's Place", feel free to contact her: papiloa@kalianet.to

My location in Niue was the Namukulu Motel. Here I've found an excellent terrain for an optimal long wire antenna. The area sloopes down and the 30m longwire heading Europe. The hotel has a good location, even for vacation and relaxing.

During the day-time the bands are nearly dead. So you can find the time to explore the island in pure nature.

This small aircraft prevents large equipment. In the background you can see another problem for a HAM-operation from American Samoa: Mountains
